ARCORES International has launched a comprehensive care program for pregnant adolescents in the municipality of San Cristóbal, an initiative that addresses the needs of this vulnerable group.
With an investment of 1,080 euros, the program began in March 2024 at the Rafael J. Mañón hospital, where initially two adolescents were attended.
In just a few months, the scope has expanded to benefit nine young women, mainly from rural areas, where access to specialized services is often limited.
The project is structured around three fundamental pillars: medical monitoring of pregnancy, psychological and nutritional , and specific training.
Participants receive workshops on various aspects related to motherhood, youth issues, family relationships, and legal guidance, creating a space for learning and personal growth. “One of our main objectives is to prevent school dropout,” explains one of the coordinators. “We insist on the importance of these young women continuing their official studies, as education is key to breaking cycles of vulnerability.”
How we accompany them
The program has a multidisciplinary team composed of a coordinating group that establishes policies and guidelines, a technical team responsible for training, and a body of volunteers who make home visits to understand the family environment of the adolescents and provide contextualized .
In addition to professional accompaniment, beneficiaries receive medicines, nutritional supplements, and baby baskets, alleviating the economic burden of early motherhood.
The Rafael J. Mañón hospital has enthusiastically welcomed the initiative, making specialist doctors and istrative staff available to the program, who provide excellent care to both the team and the participating adolescents.
This project aligns with Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and 5 (Gender Equality), reaffirming ARCORES Spain’s commitment to building healthier and more equitable communities in the Dominican Republic, hearts for young mothers.
